Grain Growth and Seed Quality of Some Soybean Genotypes

ABSTRACT: Grain growth and seed quality of five soybean Glycine max (L.) Merril] genotypes, namely BARI soybean-6, BU soybean1, BD2329, BD2331 and AGS313 were analyzed using randomized complete block design with three replications. Genotypic differences in seed growth indicated that seed of BU soybean1 ceased to grow at 36 days after anthesis (DAA), while seed growth in BARI soybean-6, BD2329, BD2331 and AGS313 continued up to 40, 38, 42, and 48 DAA, respectively. Seed development concurrently decreased seed moisture content of the genotypes. Seed moisture content began to decrease from 8, 12, 12, 10 and 9 DAA, and the highest viability was found on 36, 39, 36, 26 and 40 DAA in BU soybean 1, BARI soybean-6, BD2331, BD2329 and AGS 313, respectively. The lines of moisture content and that of viability intercepted on 22, 28, 22, 22 and 26 DAA in BU soybean1, BARI soybean-6, BD2331, BD2329 and AGS 313, respectively. BU soybean 1 showed the maximum protein content (44.19%), while AGS313 had the least (37.29%). The highest amount of Ca (0.49%) was observed in AGS313 and the lowest was found in BU soybean1 (0.37%). There was no significant difference among genotypes in Mg content, except BU soybean1 which had the lowest (0.19%). P content was the highest (0.39%) in AGS313, while the lowest was in BD2331 (0.19%). It was concluded that BU soybean1 is the earliest variety having the highest protein content.
