NITROGEN AND PLANT DENSITY EFFECTS ON SEED SIZED TUBER YIELD AND QUALITY OF POTATO

NITROGEN AND PLANT DENSITY EFFECTS ON SEED SIZED TUBER YIELD AND QUALITY OF POTATO

ABSTRACT: The effect of nitrogen and plant spacing on seed sized tuber yield and seed quality of potato (cv. Asterisk) was studied at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujubur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur. Four rates of nitrogen (100, 130, 160 and 190 kg ha-1) and four plant spacing (70 cm × 25 cm, 60 cm × 25 cm, 50 cm × 25 cm and 40 cm × 25 cm) constituted the treatment variables. In general, application of higher rate of nitrogen and higher plant spacing intensified canopy development, plant growth and increased total tuber development of seed potato. Application of 190 kg N ha-1 and 40 cm × 25 cm plant spacing contributed to the highest seed sized tuber yield (30.59 t ha-1) which was identical to that produced with 130 kg N ha-1 at 40 cm × 25 cm plant spacing. Contrary, the treatment of 160 kg Nha-1 and 40 cm × 25 cm plant spacing produced the maximum tuber yield per plot (20.88 kg) and the highest tuber yield per hectare (34.81 t ha-1). The N levels and spacing did not affect significantly the N and K content in tuber though the higher rates increased accumulation of the two elements. Similarly soluble sugar and starch content were also not affected significantly by the N levels and different plant spacing. Therefore, for getting maximum seed sized tuber yield 190 kg N ha-1 and for maximum tuber yield 160 kg N ha-1 at 40 cm × 25 cm spacing are suggested to apply.

PATHOLOGICAL STUDY OF BACTERIAL DISEASES OF LIVER OF CATTLE

PATHOLOGICAL STUDY OF BACTERIAL DISEASES OF LIVER OF CATTLE

ABSTRACT: The research was carried out to study the prevalence of liver infections of cattle in Gazipur district and to investigate the gross and microscopic lesions of the liver infections along with isolation and identification of non-specific bacteria causing infections of cattle. A total of thirty liver samples were collected from different slaughter houses of Gazipur district immediately after slaughter. Nutrient broth was used for taking the swab samples. Different microbiological protocols were used to isolate and identify the bacteria. Four bacterial species were isolated from the collected samples e.g. Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epididermis, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae subsp. pneumonia. The highest cultural prevalence was found in case of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli mixed infection (90%). Most frequent cases were abscess with hemorrhages. Multiple firm white nodular lesions with abscess, areas of congestion, necrotic patch were also found in this investigation. In Staphylococcus aureus infections, caseous necrosis surrounded with many neutrophils and fibrous connective tissue proliferation were seen. Leucocytic infiltration in presence of fatty change was found in case of Escherichia coli mixed with other anaerobes bacterial infections. The observed highest lesions were hemorrhages (83.34%) followed by abscess (76.67%), congestion (66.67%) and nodular lesions (60%). Therefore, the study might help to take preventive measures for the reduction of liver infections in cattle in the study area.

SYSTEM PRODUCTIVITY OF TROPICAL SUGARBEET INTERCROPPED WITH SUGARCANE

SYSTEM PRODUCTIVITY OF TROPICAL SUGARBEET INTERCROPPED WITH SUGARCANE

ABSTRACT: An experiment was conducted at experimental farm of Panchagarh sugar mills, Panchagarh under Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain Soils (AEZ 1) at northern region of Bangladesh during cropping season 2014-2015 to evaluate the effect of inter-cropping of sugarbeet with sugarcane with respect to attributes of yield, quality and economic benefits of both the crops. Four tropical sugarbeet genotypes, namely Shubra, PAC 6008, Aranka and SZ 35 were used along with the variety of Sugarcane (Isd 39). Results implied that maximum germination percentage (89.37), beet length (20.46 cm), beet diameter (8.05 cm), average beet weight (1.30 kg), beet yield (90.50 t ha-1) and brix (19.28 %) were found in Shubra genotype while the highest tiller population (221.25× 103 ha-1)), millable cane (102.86×103 ha-1), stalk height (3.36 cm), stalk diameter (2.28 cm) and cane yield (96.48 t ha-1) were found from sole sugarcane. However, inter-node, average cane weight and brix percentage of cane provided no significant variations. Maximum income was recorded in single row sugarcane with sugarbeet Shubra (268381.30 Tk.ha-1) and the highest benefit cost ratio 3.00 was found from same treatment combination. The maximum profit was found in sugarcane-sugarbeet inter-cropping system than sole sugarcane and also sole sugarbeet. Considering the total cost and economic return, different factors associated with production of sugarbeet intercrop with sugarcane might be a profitable package in Northern region of Bangladesh.

Antifungal Activity of Botanicals and Biocontrol agents against Sclerotium rolfsii Causing Foot and Root Rot Disease of Lentil

ABSTRACT: Foot and root rot disease caused by Sclerotium rolfsii is a destructive soil borne disease of lentil (Lens culinaris). The present experiment was conducted to determine the inhibitory effect of thirteen plant extracts and two biocontrol agents on in-vitro mycelium growth of S. rolfsii. The experiment was conducted in the Laboratory of Pulse Research Center, RARS, BARI, Ishwardi, Pabna. Seven isolates of S. rolfsii were collected from foot and root rot affected lentil plant. Antifungal activity of thirteen botanicals and two biocontrol agents (T. harziznum and T. viride) was tested against a fast-growing isolate (Sc-38) of the pathogen following poisoned food technique. Among the botanicals only Black cumin inhibited colony growth of S. rolfsii and the colony diameter ranged 0.00, 0.83, 4.27 and 6.00 cm at 3, 6, 9 & 15 days after incubation, respectively. Amendment of PDA with compost and culture filtrate T. harziznum and T. viride remarkably inhibited the colony growth of S. rolfsii compared to control. Efficacy of four treatments of biocontrol agents was better than botanical treatments. Remarkable inhibition was achieved with Tulsi at 3, 6 and 9 DAI compared to control. Botanical extracts (Black cumin and Tulsi) and biocontrol agents (T. harzianum and T. viride) are found effective against the fungus of Sclerotium rolfsii.

INSECT PEST STATUS AND INSECTICIDE USE IN T. AMAN RICE CULTIVATION UNDER BARIND AREAS OF BANGLADESH

ABSTRACT: The study was conducted in four districts viz., Rajshahi, Noagaon, Chapainawabganj and Natore under Barind areas of Bangladesh during July to November 2020 through pre-tested questionnaire survey among the target farmers, i.e. 30 farmers per district to gather information on existing socio-economic aspects of T. Aman rice farmers as well as their opinion on insect pests and insecticide application against insect pest. Most of the farmers were middle to old aged with illiterate to primary level of education having small to medium farm size, small to medium family size with high farming experiences and medium to high level of annual income. According to the farmers’ opinion in selected areas, stem borer (Scirpophaga incertulas), leaf folder (Cnaphalocrosis medinalis) and brown plant hopper (BPH) (Nilparvata lugens) were detected as severe while ear cutting caterpillar (Mythimna separata) and rice gall midge (Orseolia oryzae) were the major insect pests of T. Aman rice. For combating those insect pests’, farmers mainly use Thiamethoxam (20%) + Chlorantraniliprole (20%), Chlorpyrifos (20%), Chlorpyrifos (50%) + Cypermethrin (5%), Acephate (45%) + Imidacloprid (25%), Cartap (50%) and Carbofuran (3% or 5%). Number of insecticides use, number of sprays and number of insects pests manage by farmers were positively correlated with the education level, farm size, farming experience and annual income of the respondents.

FIELD EFFICACY OF SELECTED BIO-PESTICIDES AND SYNTHETIC INSECTICIDES AGAINST SUCKING PESTS OF COTTON AND THEIR IMPACT ASSESSMENT ON SPIDER

ABSTRACT: The study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of Toximite 1.8 EC, Ecomec 1.8 EC, Tundra 20 SP, Marshal 20 EC, Dursban 20 EC, Imitaf 20 SL, Haymidor 70 WG against sucking insect pests of cotton. Data regarding sucking pest infestation and prevalence of beneficial insects was recorded days before spray and, 3 and 7 days after spray. The results indicated that at 3 and 7 DAS, Imidacloprid (Haymidor 70 WG) provided the lowest number of jassid per leaf (2.75 and 1.75, respectively) with the highest population reduction (44.85%) over pre-treated population. At 3 and 7 DAS of second spray, the lowest number of jassid per leaf (1.17 and 1.42) was recorded in the Abamectin (biopesticide 1) and Acetamiprid (Tundra 20 SP) treated plot but the highest population reduction (67.56%) over pre-treated population was found in Imidacloprid (Imitaf 20 SL) treated plot. At 3rd spray, the highest population reduction (67.63%) was found in Carbosulfan (Marshal 20 EC) treated plot. The highest per cent reduction (38.19%) of mite infested leaf per plant was found in the Abamectin followed by Imidacloprid (Imitaf 20 SL) (33.33%) treated plot. At 3 DAS of first spray, the lowest number of spiders was recorded from the Imidacloprid (Imitaf 20 SL) (0.08) treated plot, implied that Imidacloprid adversely affect the spider population. The results revealed that the treatment Imidacloprid was identified as the superior and promising insecticide among the treatments against all the sucking pests of cotton followed by Acetamiprid (Tundra 20 SP). Biopesticides as Abamectin (Toximite 1.8 EC) and Azadirachtin (Ecomec 1.8 EC) were found as less toxic against spider compared to other tested insecticides.

A REVIEW OF TRADITIONAL FISH PROCESSING METHODS PRACTICED IN BANGLADESH

A REVIEW OF TRADITIONAL FISH PROCESSING METHODS PRACTICED IN BANGLADESH

ABSTRACT: Fish processing method for the long-term preservation of fish is very common practice throughout the world. Different traditional fish preservation techniques, such as drying, salting, smoking, and fermentation, are practiced in Bangladesh near the harvesting area. Due to the perishable nature of fish, lack of storage facility and poor transportation during the glut period, traditional fish processing methods are practiced in Bangladesh. This paper reviews different processing methods practiced traditionally in Bangladesh and the nutritional and microbiological status of processed fishery products. Drying, salting, and smoking are performed on the curing method and fermentation, breaking down organic substances into simpler compounds by enzymatic and microbial action. A higher amount of protein content is found in processed fishery products. Total Volatile Basic Nitrogen (TVBN) value was within 3mg to 20mg, except for some marine fish species exceeding the acceptable limit. The most commonly found bacteria are Salmonella, Vibrio, and Escherichia. coli. Fungal counts have not been well studied until now except for some dried species and salted hilsha. The higher value in proximate composition and microorganism number from acceptable limit due to poor quality raw materials, unhygienic processing conditions, insufficient packaging and improper storage, use of unsafe insecticide, no well-established marketing channel, and lack of knowledge and awareness. Proper hygiene and sanitation should be maintained from handling to the storage of all the products. This review aims to update the motive for traditional fish processing methods, nutritional, chemical and microbiological composition and limitations of these four types of traditional fish products.
