Effect of waterlogging stress on yield and yield contributing traits of soybean

Effect of waterlogging stress on yield and yield contributing traits of soybean

ABSTRACT: A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy research field of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University during January 2018 to May 2018 to evaluate the effects of waterlogging on yield and yield contributing traits of soybean genotypes. Ten soybean genotypes, viz. G0006, BD-2336, AGS-383, PK-472, BD-2350, GMOT-22, NCS-1, Shohag, BU soybean 1 and BARI soybean 6 were tested under three waterlogging durations, namely control, 4 days of waterlogging and 8 days of waterlogging. The experiment was laid out in a splitplot design with three replications. The results indicated that waterlogging significantly reduced plant growth, such as plant height, number of branches plant-1, and yield and yield contributing traits, such as number of pods plant-1, number of seeds pod-1, 100-seed weight, seed yield and harvest index. Those characters were affected more by 8 days of waterlogging than that of 4 days. Nonetheless, the genotypes Shohag, BU soybean 1 and BARI soybean 6 were less affected by waterlogging. The seed yield of BU soybean 1, Shohag and BARI soybean 6 was 2.11 g plant-1, 1.93 g plant-1 and 1.87g plant-1 under eight days waterlogging condition, whereas the relatively more susceptible genotypes G0006, PK-472 and BD-2336 had 0.54 g plant-1, 0.73 g plant-1 and 0.96 g plant-1. Therefore, genotypes Shohag, BU soybean 1 and BARI soybean 6 may be suitable for growing under waterlogging up to 8 days.

Effect of seedling age on yield and lint quality of cotton

Effect of seedling age on yield and lint quality of cotton

ABSTRACT: The study was conducted in the experimental field of the Cotton Research, Training and Seed Multiplication Farm, Sreepur, Gazipur during June 2018 to February 2019 to find out the effective age of cotton seedling for transplanting. Five categories of seedlings viz.,10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 days old were tested along with direct seed sowing as control treatment. Survival rate of the seedlings among the age categories ranges from 79 to 96%. The highest and lowest survival rates of the seedlings were observed in direct seed sowing and 30 days age category seedlings, respectively. The seedling age did not affect yield and yield contributing agronomic traits like plant height and boll weight. Other agronomic traits namely number of plant per hectare, monopodial branch, sympodioal branch and boll per plant among the seedling age categories differed significantly. The highest numbers of monopodial branch and boll per plant were found in control category and the highest number of sympodioal branch per plant was observed in 15 days age category. The seedling age categories had insignificant effect on lint quality characteristics like length, strength and micronaire value of the lint.

Management of fruit borer of tomato using cypermethrin

Management of fruit borer of tomato using cypermethrin

ABSTRACT: Cypermethrin 10 EC was applied in the tomato field following different doses and spray schedule to know the infestation of tomato by fruit borer Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The study also investigated the yield of tomato and benefit cost ratio of cypermethrin applied to control fruit borer. Results showed that the tested doses of Cypermethrin significantly reduced the infestation level of tomato and exerted higher yield. The lowest rate of fruit infestation (2.50% number and 1.92% weight) and the highest marketable yield (32.7 t ha-1) were obtained with Cypermethrin 10 EC @ 1 ml/L water sprayed at 45 days after transplanting and repetition of the same at 7 days interval. The highest marginal benefit cost ratio (6.6) was found with Cypermethrin 10 EC @ 1 ml l-1 of water sprayed after initiation of 5% level of fruit infestation and repetition of the same at 15 days interval.

Abundance and diversity of arthropods in mustard

ABSTRACT: The experiment was carried out with mustard Brassica juncea variety BARI Shorisha-11 to know the abundance, richness and diversity of foraging arthropods in the mustard field during September 2016 to March 2017 at Gazipur in Bangladesh. In this study, mobile arthropods were collected with sweep net and sweeping was done at weekly interval from seedling stage of the plant to maturity of the siliqua. A total of 311 arthropods were collected from the field which belonged to 19 species of 19 different families and 7 Orders. Among the arthropods, 5 species were found as insect pests which belonged to 4 families of 3 Orders. There were 5 species of predators of 3 families under 2 Orders. The pollinators were statistically higher in abundance and richness compared to pests, predators and other categories of arthropods but the pests prevailed with higher diversity. Cabbage white fly and flea beetle showed the highest and lowest abundance of insect pest species, respectively. All the predator insects belonged to the Order Odonata and Coleoptera, and the abundance of the predator insects did not differ significantly.

Apiculture for sustainable agriculture: Bangladesh perspective

Apiculture for sustainable agriculture: Bangladesh perspective

ABSTRACT: The paper is targeted to trace out the role of apiculture in improving crop yield leading to the betterment of human livelihood in Bangladesh. Different cultivated crops in Bangladesh such as cabbage, cauliflower, mango, litchi, mustard, cotton, onion, coriander and chili are highly dependent on honey bee pollination. Adequate pollination results in higher seed yield, quality and germination capacity. Besides, honey and beeswax are the casual output of apiculture which acts as a good income generating source. Other bee producing products like pollen, propolis and royal jelly are very much useful to make secondary products of human use. Considering the benefits, some organizations of the country have shown their interest on commercial rearing of honey bee. But making profit from this business has been very difficult due to lack of related information, institutional research, sufficient machinery and equipment. Farmers are involved in indiscriminate application of pesticides which kills the natural pollinators as well as deteriorates the environmental condition. DAE (Department of Agricultural Extension) has taken initiatives for training on apiculture and dissemination of necessary technologies to improve the situation. Attention on apiculture will ultimately lead to the maximization of crop yield, improvement of livelihood and conservation of biodiversity.
